Car won't start: what to do?
What happens when you turn the key often shows where the fault is.
What the symptoms mean
-
You turn the key and the starter is silent, only clicks or whirrs
The starter has most likely failed.
Starter repair -
You turn the key and the dashboard lights flicker or barely glow
The battery is most likely flat. This usually happens when the alternator no longer charges the battery or the battery is old.
Alternator repair -
The battery light was on while driving
If the battery (charging) light was on in the dashboard and the car will not start after you switched off the engine, the alternator has most likely stopped charging.

How to make a starter and alternator last longer
- Do not jump-start other cars from yours. It puts a heavy load on your alternator and battery.
- Keep oil off the starter and alternator. If you notice the engine leaking oil, have the leak fixed in time: oil that gets onto the starter or alternator damages them.
- Switch off start-stop. Every engine start loads the starter, and this function starts the engine many times on every trip.
