How the repair goes

Bench test
We test the alternator on a bench with computer equipment: we measure charging, voltage and current, and check that it holds the load and makes no unusual noise.

Taking apart
We take the unit apart and find the real cause of the fault.

Checking the parts
We check which parts are worn.

Agreeing with you
We call you, tell you which parts we recommend replacing so the unit lasts, and exactly what the repair will cost.

Assembly and testing
We put the unit back together and test it once more.
Common alternator faults
- Diode bridge. Usually burns out from heat: the voltage becomes unstable and the battery is charged weakly.
- Voltage regulator. Gives too low or too high a voltage: the battery runs flat or is overcharged.
- Brushes. They wear out: charging comes and goes, and the battery light comes on in the dashboard.
- Bearings and pulley. You hear a whine, feel vibration, and the belt wears faster.
- Oil and moisture. Oil or salty water getting inside damages the alternator, so an engine oil leak is worth fixing in time.
